I really liked the actor
who played McCoy. A job well-done. He really played it so well, you could believe it WAS the original Bones (almost). I loved him following Kirk around hypo-ing him! Fun.
I was comparing, too, but got caught up in the story. You're right about the hand-to-hand vs. phaser. It would be interesting to ask the writers/director that question.
