I think it was a way to recreate the whole Star Trek universe so that they can fit new actors into it without having to check every line to make sure they didn't screw up against the movies or series. There are so many trekkers out there who know every damn thing about the series/movies, they'd catch the smallest glitch and would be very unforgiving.
Now they can have a whole new series or adventures based on the redesigned universe. I think it was pretty savvy of them to do it this way because, believe me, we were out here waiting to find fault if they didn't do OUR STAR TREK justice. Trekkers (and I AM one) are a picky bunch. 😁
