The Star Trek Universe as we knew it:
Kirk's father lived and Kirk knew his father while growing up.
Onward through Kirk's captaincy & his death and beyond. Spock as an old man goes to save Romulus from a nearby supernova using red matter. Creates black hole through which the Romulan is sucked during his attack on Spock. Spock is sucked in, too.
Romulan emerges, finds the Kelvin and tries to get Spock's location from the Kelvin's Captain. He asks the Stardate after the Captain says doesn't know Spock. From the Stardate, he realizes Spock has not yet entered this time line thorugh the black hole. Kirk's father is killed which is where the two timelines diverge.

The Romulan wants Spock to witness the destruction of his planet so he patiently waits for Spock to emerge from the Black Hole and takes Spock prisoner the moment he does emerge then strands Spock on the prison planet where he can witness Vulcan's destruction.

All clear now?
