If we had several natural disasters in a row, let's say volcanic eruptions, that cover the planet in ash disrupting transportation, communication and the growing of food, we'd see a societal breakdown that might be abrupt and devastating in nature. It probably WON'T happen but it could. And after the last couple of years, it's looking not as outlandish and it might have 10 years ago.
