This hasn't been about justifying the event. This was explanatory. No one wants to see students shot. Contrary to the left's belief that mom and pop square were rooting for the guardsmen, most felt it was just a tragedy from any angle. Most also thought, like I do, that when guns appear on the seen its time to quiet down and leave.
Being a heroic protestor for peace is an oxymoron. While it's great to hold pacifist beliefs, its stupid to provoke (or even hang around) people with guns who have been deployed to target YOU. Tiananmen Square or a College campus in the states - the results will be the same. And while good can and has emerged from all these things, the smart move is simply to live nonviolently - serving an example. Not protesting or hanging around protesters and getting hit by folks looking for targets.
