"starting to look more like TMI every day"

Damn right it is. An accident in an industry with a remarkable safety record overall, and a bunch of ignorant boobs shut an entire energy technology down for decades because of it.

There have been over 200 wells drilled in the Gulf in water 5,000 feet deep or deeper, of which about 70 are development wells producing product. Operating safely, and without most people having any idea the wells even existed. Now we have an accident in one well, and the response is hysteria. Go back and read the post that started all this again.

So let's just stop all this evil drilling, and replace it with...well...nothing.

When you're left trying to run this country on sunbeams and breezes, remember why.

Of course, to a lot of people, that result is not a bug, but a feature. To the people running our government right now, the most important word in the term "managed scarcity" is "managed."

What to do out here in the real world? Find out why the well went rogue. Find out why the shutoffs didn't work. If it was corporate and regulator negligence (and there's some evidence of this), nail both company and government to the wall for it. Rework the technology if it needs reworking, deal with the regulatory issues, and move on from there.
