Do you honestly think BP is going to profit from the decisions it made? Here's an article on a corner that was cut. What do you think that saved them? A couple of million, maybe? You think they saved more money than they're going to lose this year? Their stock is in the tank, the business itself is in question, and they're going to be liable for billions.
Are they going to be more or less profitable than other oil companies that might be a bit more careful?
In the market, stupidity should be painful, if not financially lethal. But if all you need to show your boss is the signoff from pet regulators, why think the issues through any harder?
If there's something else that needs discussion, maybe it's that liability cap. Where do such caps cross the line between protection from the modern predatory legal industry, and protection of the company from real and appropriate liability?
And who are you going to get to regulate the industry now? What's going to be the guarantee that this group isn't going to get co-opted?
Who watches the watchmen?
Actually, there's an answer to that: other watchmen. There's no reason regulation needs to be government, and there's no reason it can't be competitive. I can deliver details if you're interested.
