All too common a tale

I was in school during that time period, but I've heard similar stories. Many of the projects I've worked on have had some exploration history conducted by oil companies in the 80's. They had tons of money, metals were in a bull market, it was only natural that they expand into that realm. It was not always a good marriage between the hardrocks and the softrocks. I've seen really good work, and really bad work, from this time.

But the metals went bearish for nearly two decades, and the minerals divisions were sold or laid off by the oil companies. At the end, even the major miners were cutting their exploration teams and left exploration to the junior companies.

As an asside, you might enjoy the book "A hole in the ground with a liar on top". It documents the great mining swindles of American history. I suspect this excitment about deposits in Afghanistan will certainly spawn some swindles.
