What are your sources? Show me your sources, and I'll show you how they're lying to you.
In 2008, United Health (to give just one example) had net earnings after taxes and such of $2.98 billion on revenues of $81.19 billion. Profit: 3.7 percent. In 2009, net earnings were $3.82 billion on revenues of $87.14 billion. Profit: 4.4 percent.
So far in 2010 (second quarter ending June 2010) the company has net earnings of $2.31 billion on revenues of $46.45 billion. Profit: 5 percent.
Source: Financial reports and SEC filings
Now, someone who wanted to lie to you would take that five percent in 2010 and the 2.98 percent in 2008, and scream that their profits had gone up by 70 percent! Kind of like a town's population that grows from four people to eight is a "100 percent increase."
I've lost track of how many times I've had to show numbers like this. You'd think once it would stick.
