A Dad writes:

The public education system exists outside of our market economy. Teacher salaries aren't set by laws of supply and demand, there is no meaningful competition and teachers have little or no professional freedom. The best and brightest who c...ome up with stuff like iPhones have no avenue to be rewarded in our education system. So we get little or no innovation. There is no system to penalize failure. The system itself is the problem. There are social problems causing bad behavior, but those too are mostly the result of government busy bodies mandating political correctness and a culture of "nobody is a loser". Get rid of the dept of education, make education an innovative and rewarding field, get tough on kids whose parents never taught them respect.

In another post from the same Dad:
Perfect example of lack of innovation: patents and intellectual property. There are over 3 million teachers in the country. These smart people that work in the trenches should be a gold mine for innovative educational processes. But without... a culture of innovation all of the ideas come from the PHDs at the top down. Real, practical ideas come from the bottom up. Have the system reward innovative and/or patentable ideas from teachers. Make it part of the reward system. $2000 per patent or $1000 per significant publication. Of course with government bureaucracy in charge this ain't happening.
