I'm with you, Jody.

I took classes that would be useful if I went to college, like advanced English, an extra math class, etc. but I also went with Cooperative Education in my Senior year and spent half a day working as a minimum wage job learning some bookkeeping and other skills in a retail furniture store for class credit. Invaluable experience.

I think the education system has gone way off track, emphasizing too many alternative things. What does it matter if a kid gets art education if he or she can't use English correctly? The basics should be emphasized and no kid should graduate who can't use English correctly, figure his/her own checkbook, have a grasp of history and the Constitution. Currently, they're just trying to process them through when what we need are kids who are taught to think and to be responsible citizens.

Like you, I know what's broken. And throwing money at it, isn't going to fix it. It needs to be fixed from within. Tell the local systems, "this is how much money you have, this is what the kids need to know. Cut out the dross and get with the program. And if that means, cutting out some of the three million sports programs, so be it." Sports teach aggression, anyway. Competitiveness is ok but I've heard too damn many coaches screaming at their charges. I don't much like the coaching mentality.
