You're not supposed to remember that almost every last American who ever put on a sheet or hauled a black man up a tree at the end of a rope was a Democratic voter. That almost every politician who stood in a schoolroom door or voted against voting rights was a Democratic politician.

I would bet money that if you surveyed 100 people at random today, they would tell you quite firmly that the Klansmen were Republicans, as was George Wallace. They would tell you that all the Republicans of the time voted against civil rights in the 60s.

In a masterful display of 1984-style historical rewriting, the Democrats have managed to take the white hood of history from the head of the donkey and stick it on the elephant. This has been done to the extent that a former Klansman holds a Democratic seat in the Senate. You've got to admire skill like that.
