One big difference is, people on the right like Lott get skinned alive and dragged across the Salt Flats for their racist tendencies. Useful leftists like Sharpton, Byrd, and others get a free pass.

Can you imagine what would happen to a Republican Senator who was found to have been a Klansman in his youth? Regardless of his current thinking?

And remember, there are two kinds of racists: the standard one that hates minorities and thinks they should all be somewhere else, and the liberal kind that believes minorities need to be cared for and coddled, because there is no way they could possibly succeed in life without the gentle shepherding of their advocates. Some minorities might feel that the condescending pat on the head is almost as bad as the whip end.
