Women have been using herbal abortifacients for thousands of years. Midwives knew the method, as well as how to deliver babies and care for pregnant women.
It was women's business then. It's still women's business. Folk knowledge is still out there. Birth contol pills themselves can and have been used in high dosage as morning-after pills for decades. If RU-486 use becomes widespread, we will see a return to the old ways with a new tool.
Abortion is not pleasant. It's not a first option. It's not an efficient form of birth control either, but if your options for effective birth contol suck, sometimes it gets used that way.
Look at the fertility problems in the former Soviet Union for an example of what happens when abortion is used as birth control rather than as a remedy for an unwanted pregnancy.
