You talk to a lot of heros...

and you'll find that they were scared at the time but they overcame their fear to act. In essense, their ability to overcome their emotions is what made them a hero.

Who wouldn't be scared about running into a burning building? Firefighters train themselves to overcome their fear.

Who wouldn't be scared when someone is shooting at them? Soldiers and police officers must overcome their fear if they are to function and to survive.

Who wouldn't be heartbroken at seeing a severely injured child? Paramedics, doctors, and nurses have to push aside their emotions if they're going to save the child's life. They also have to learn how to distance themselves emotionally from their patients' suffering lest they crack under the strain.

In a similar vein, pilots have to push back their emotions if they're going to save a crippled plane.

Emotions are a valuable part of the human experience, but frequently they get in the way of good judgement and the ability to reason.
