The election law standing in the way of the Democrats' bait-and-switch tactic will no doubt fall to some legal end-run.
The justification for crapping on the law: it would be denying the New Jersey voters a "right to choose."
This doesn't stand up to even cursory examination. Torricelli was nominated--chosen--this year, and selected to represent the Democratic Party in New Jersey. They knew he was a crook when they did this. They didn't care, assuming that he would skate by, and they supported him as long as his numbers held up.
Suddenly when it looks like not enough New Jersey voters will "choose" Torricelli, they pull him out and stick someone else in. Why the hell forcing them to keep Torricelli in the race would be denying voters a "choice" escapes me.
The law in place was intended to prevent exactly this sort of candidate juggling.
