You can pressure him, but you can't force him.
Why the hell forcing them to keep Torricelli in the race would be denying voters a "choice" escapes me.
Torricelli has taken himself out. New Jersey Democrats may have (probably have) withdrawn support for him, but he didn't have to withdraw. Forcing "them" to keep him in is beside the point.
If Torricelli resigns (which he may, under pressure), and his replacement is appointed, the Republicans will be sorry.
The other alternative, besides running a one-candidate race in which the candidate only needs to show up and vote for himself to win even if the rest of the state stays home, is for the Democrats to put some muscle behind an aggressive write-in campaign for Lautenberg. It really can be done.
Considering that Lautenberg is apparently the Anti-Torricelli, it might work. The Republicans probably don't have the time to dig up anything on him to run in negative ads at Hallowe'en.
