I find the prospect of being "saved" much scarier than any government "help".
Well, that seems to be part of an odd mindset, shared with a lot of liberals. I don't see it as having much basis in reality. There are a lot more people in jail for not paying taxes or not following government regulations than there are for religious reasons. No Jehovah's Witness has ever threatened me with a loss of wealth or liberties if I failed to toe their religious line. Neither has Ashcroft. And honestly, how many people have really been driven into bankruptcy by a whispered religious campaign?* Now how many small businesses have been bankrupted by government regulations and taxes?
Many liberals are constantly vigilant about having their liberties infringed in certain specific areas, while ignoring massive intrusions in other areas. To be sure, many conservatives have similar blinders, just in different areas.
People who sit up at night in terror of Ashcroft seeing what library books they have been reading, have no problems with the idea of turning over their retirement, medical care, education, and other critical portions of their lives to the total control of the government. Go figure.
If people would be half as suspicious of government motives as they are of almost anything a corporation does, we would be a lot better off.
*I get the impression you live in a really screwy neighborhood. Do they stone people, or dip suspected witches in ponds?
