The "expanding faction"

I noticed that you use a technique that journalists have been using (I pointed out an example here.)

That is the projection of a particular view into a much larger number of people than the facts may indicate.

Sample phrases:

...There are a substantial number of citizens of this country who would like nothing better than to return to that sort of society.

...A great deal of Right’s base is made up of people who have deep religious convictions, and think that they have the mandate from the High Holy to force their views and beliefs on the rest of us.

I don't think the actual percentage of rabid fundamentalists, even among Republicans, warrants this kind of concern. If most Republicans were fundamentalist, how did Arnold win the recall?

You may have noted that Bush has not exactly been tearing up Washington to invoke massive social conservative reforms. There have been a few: Tony mentioned removing Federal funds from (not prohibiting) stem cell research and a couple of other things. A ban on partial-birth abortion is moving through Congress. But I don't think the Constitution is tottering.

I would like to come up with some actual numbers, but it would require searching surveys. Standard surveys that simply mention denomination aren't good enough, as the "fundamentalist" views span many religions, and there are few religions that do not have a fundamendalist faction somewhere in them.

Remember, I'm not saying that religious looneys don't bear watching at all, but you have to put them in perspective with much more imminent threats to our liberties and property.

Gotta run...have to haul my daughter to the Renaissance Faire, where she has landed her first job (beats the hell out of MY first job...field work among the cornstalks.)
