That's kind of avoiding the issue at hand. You said "I'm not aware of any place humans have wanted to colonize before anybody had stepped on it." If you think they are adequate surrogates for humans then you should consider them adequate first landers as well. We know far more about Mars than the first arrivals on any continent or island and we have far more technology to assure our survival.
