The wealth accumulated by real capitalism then tends to protect itself through means that are often not true to the basic principles of capitalism.
This is certainly true, and the method used is by allowing the government to interfere in the market process. P. J. O'Rourke once wrote that when buying and selling are controlled by the legislature, the first thing to be bought and sold will be legislators.
In a mixed economy, the wealthy can use government force to obtain things or set conditions that would never be possible in a true free market, like restrict entry into a field, cripple the competition with regulations, or alter tax policy in their favor.
If you look at almost any major corporate abuse in our past history, the government mucking with the free market is at the root of most of it, by allowing the unscrupulous advantages and means they would not otherwise have.
