if you wouldn't trust them to feed your goldfish you think they are stupid

Or to be more accurate you think they are stupid/crazy/willfully ignorant in certain ways. SO basically you complain because the Democrats think the Republicans are stupid when you think they are stupid yourself. Not having "real intelligence" is another way of saying stupid.

This is a big problem for the Republicans, they think they are right and yet half the population (who it is hard to paint as stupid or deranged) don't accept it as true. So either the Democrats are deluded or incapable of reason or the Republicans are.

This is the problem you get with faith based policy instead of science based on experiments and facts. The Democrats believe the Republicans don't really know what they are doing, and are just winging it. The Republicans can't point to mainstream economic policy to justify what they are doing.

Then the Republicans start pouting about the complains of "show me" skepticism from the Democrats and start complaining about lack of civility. The Democrats equate civility with letting the Republicans continue to wing it or not cough up proof their policies work. There's nothing new in this kind of standoff, go to sci.physics and you'll see it every day of the week.

The Republicans say this is so rude then they wouldn't vote for a Democrat. Sometimes the Democrats cave and hope to siphon off some Republican swinging voters. This encourages the Republicans to think they can continue to wing it and hope the data will eventually vindicate them.

The real reason for the problem of course is using experimentation wrongly. All of these arguments between Republicans and Democrats can be resolved by proper trials. For example a small tax cut can be made with the agreement it expires after a time and then the economists measure the result. Then you do more and more and then everyone knows which ones work and by how much.

The current situation is if the Democrats beat Bush and happen to fix the economy the Republicans will claim credit for it all, like they claim Reagan was the reason Clinton did well economically. Again, the situation is occuring from lack of controlled experiments and testable and falsifiable data.

Deregulation is another canard. If it happens and is successful the Republicans will crow about it and if it doesn't work then they'll claim it didn't go far enough. The only way is careful deregulation in controlled experiments and examine the data. That's what economics is as a science but it is constantly fighting politics trying to obscure the data.
