Not exactly.

While not thrilled with the prospect of legalizing law-breakers, I understand that this new program would stop short of full legalization and after two 3 year periods would require them to return to Mexico.

If properly applied it would enable law enforcement to keep better track of all these folks illegally in our country and get a better fix on the immensity of the problem. Properly administered it might actually reduce the number of illegals here over time if one follows through with the enforcement bit at the end of the six years. It might also encourage them to learn English and respect law. Every time someone breaks the law and lives in fear they are easy prey to be used by others to commit more crimes and can't speak up because they already have broken laws.

There are a lot of other useful tools that this initiative would provide. Fingerprinting and photographs would help to create a more reliable base for investigating crimes and future border control.

And here's the kicker - if they don't sign up you deport them when they are caught and bar them from the program in the future because they show no respect for our laws or our graciousness. So each illegal crosser will have encouragement to sign because if they don't register they will be treated much harsher than those who do.

I think this program has been very well thought out by someone who realized we are right now doing diddly about the problem and with no form of registration - it makes keeping tabs on the problem nearly impossible.

In many ways this will make life easier for many illegals - but only those who participate. If they don't their lives will go from bad to worse because we can assume those that don't register have no intention of leaving or legally applying for citizenship through due process. They will also be assumed to be more violent criminals or those who intend to steal - not just lawbreakers.

I see a bizarre form of genius in the plan. That's why Fox is so upset and so many know their free ride wont last forever - whether they register or continue to run. Living in fear is bad and the mental hurdle of being unable to speak the language and always running from the law creates low self-esteem and an environment where crime can fluorish.

6 years is better than 20 years or 40 years. In theory, if enforced, the system should lessen he burden on America - not increase it. If not enforced it will just create another slurry of bureaucratic jobs - money that instead should be used to build more fences.

Isn't it amazing that the Mexican government can't yet turn their huge temperate climate country into a paradise? Considering their proximity to the US - they have an example of the most successful system on earth right next door! Just copy our laws exactly - copy our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. How hard can it be? Why admit inferiority and come running to the US? Why encourage your people to run to the US? It's these things that keep Mexico and Mexicans with the status and associated stigma of residents of a third world country. I guess the corruption is too great. Eventually, however, as more & more US citizens have Mexican ancestry - these same folks will encourage the US to simply take over Mexico and clean it up and turn it into the 51st state, much the same way as the Cubans in Florida seek the US takeover of Cuba from Castro. In fifty years, perhaps a hundred, there is a pretty good chances of exactly that happening if Mexico doesn't clean up its own act. A US with citizens predominantly of Mexican ancestry will show no mercy upon the Mexican lawbreakers or the Mexican government. The will appear like radical conservatives to the left of today once its their money the illegals start to take. They won't carry the burden of any PC multiculturalism trained guilt or have to be worried about being called a racial bigot. Mexico may siphon lots of money out of the US now - but they are really creating their own worst nightmare - they will actually end up wiping Mexico, the country, right off the map.
