I have seen a lot of observations and speculations on the Web about why the attitudes of Texans and Californians seem to be considerably different regarding illegal and legal workers from across the border, or even that the immigrants into Texas tend to have different attitudes from those coming into California.
As an example, this has been discussed quite a bit at National Review Online, with various theories, and I wonder if there is anything to it.

From what I have seen, Texans seem a lot more laid back about Mexicans in their state, and Bush has a long history of getting along with Latinos as governor of Texas. I wonder how much of his current immigration policy is politics, and how much is just a Texan wondering what's the big deal with having a lot of Mexicans around.
