Who said anything about shooting?

Those are your words, not mine. It's hyperbole like that which causes nothing to be done about this problem, and as a result it festers and grows worse.

"What do you think thousands of armed troops on the border will do? Say "please" and hope people will stop? What do you think that thousands of desperate people willing to travel an illegal conduit on which they know they face violence and extortion will do, with their goal in sight? Shrug their shoulders and walk home (maybe hundreds of miles) with nothing?"

Well first off, I think they will have the same effect as any other law enforcement. They'll help to create an environment in which those individuals will be far less likely to break the law. Does looting take place in areas with a strong police presense or a lax one? How about security cameras? THey deter by their very presense. If they still try to get across, apprehend them and dump them back on their side of the border.

Putting a chain link fence up along the border with razor wire on top and watch towers spaced every few miles would put a significant dent in the number of illegal crossings A service road along side of the fence could be patrolled by marked SUVs and other ATVs with the use of patrol aircraft flying overhead.
