You really afraid some dude from Guatemala is gonna take your job becuase he's willing to clean toilets or empty trash cans or mow somebody's lawn for $8.50/hour?? That's the kind of jobs we're talking about here.
At least one person here - me - had a job just like that, for noticably less than $8.50 an hour, part-time and no benefits. I don't have that job any more, but it wasn't because I lost it to an undocumented migrant.
Here's what it's really about: we make a huge f-ing deal about The Land of Opportunity, and that everyone else should be exactly like us, until push comes to shove. Then we say, "We only want you to want that, we don't want you to come here to get it."
Some people have the bravery to risk everything to come here anyway, to get what doesn't exist at home and to send a fair-sized chunk of it back. They get treated like shit and have the possibility of arrest and deportation hanging over them all the time - don't think for a minute their bosses don't threaten them with it.
The least we could do is treat them humanely while they volunteer to be exploited. Removing the threat of deportation for three years is the very least we can do.
Meanwhile, to anyone worried about deserving Americans losing low-wage, no-benefits, dead-end jobs to foreigners -- go apply for one. The employer will be relieved at the lack of paperwork which goes with hiring an American (not to mention the language issue and the inevitable prejudices) ... and you will very likely be amazed at how rewarding an honest eight hours of "menial" labor can be, even if you can't do more than cover rent and food with it, if that.
