Everyone is lying to me, it comes from the top.

If you read anything, please read Geodestinies. I read it for a class at The Colorado School of Mines. They know a bit 'bout oil. That's when I really got scared 'bout the peaking of the petroleum curve. Read the book, go ahead, It'll ruin your week, it really will. Okay, the author is lying too, I'm sure, but when I think about it, it's scary.

And when I read the NYT piece, and this IS WHAT THEY SAID: that the Saudi oil production is leveling off. Plot their discovery and production curves and you'll see discovery has past and production's slope is flattening) and they will have a difficult time meeting their own goals. And they are the world largest producer. The US went through the same curve top in the seventies, and it has never been the same since. This is a trend for world production, too. It's rising, sure, but not as fast as it was, while demand keeps going up. You do the supply/demand calcs. Do it when you are filling up your tank this summer, the Saudis cut production by 10% this year.

And it is like all those naughty firms who cook the books by calling one thing another. Shell Oil has restated it's reserves, downward. Many countries report the same number of reserves year after year after year. With no new discoveries. They are doing statistical mumbo jumbo concerning their recoverable reserves in order to recieve long term loans. I've read that the Iraq oil fields were so mismanaged that they may be ruined. 15% recovery is predicted for some fields. Oh, maybe Halliberton can repressurize them using some hi-tech shit, but what is that gonna cost us?

Things change. Resources run out. Read the book. Don't hate me if you can't sleep afterwards.
