I'm not "wealthy", the Photovoltaics set me back, but I am counting on 25-30 years of power. Like all investments, it is a risk, but I do believe there may be a time when it really pays off, perhaps better than some other invesments I've made.
There are buildings in Japan that are using Photovoltaics joined with fuel cells. (sorry, I don't have a link at hand) Very interesting tech and better than batteries for storing power. Take some of those hydrogen generating trucks foound in Iraq, cover them with photocells and leave them in the desert for awhile. Hydrogen generation is still a losing energy proposition (as is ethanol, tar sands, oil shale...), although I am excited by some of the bacteria generated Hydrogen studies.
