I invested alot of money in a residential photovoltaic system. It is not currently cost effective but it may be in the future, when electricity could be far more expensive. I, like Tony, believe in local generation. And by investing in it now I helped spur research and bring the cost down in the future. And when the power goes out in the neighborhood, I laugh. When I mow the yard using an electric mower on a sunny day, I laugh. The power used to post my rants on HZ comes from the sun.
Almost every technology that became widespread was pioneered by those wealthy enough to buy it when it was new and expensive. Solar is no exception, and I think that, like cell phones did, it will turn that critical corner in the near future. I think fuel cells are coming along this way, too, and one can immediately see how those two technologies will get along smashingly when they become cheaper and more effective.
I do wish we were working harder on safe nuclear power.
I, too, use an electric battery mower, which I really like, but I must confess I plug it into the grid. ;)
