ANWR Estimates and other stuff

Last I saw, aNWR projected production could be 800,000 bpd
(or are jms correctly points out, since there has been no drilling - this figure could be as low as zero, nado zilch)
Saudi imports to US are in the order of 1.5-2 million bpd.
If what slips, ANWR could in theory make up the difference but maybe not.

And ed is still wrong about the article. Yes there are vast reserves, but there are no new reserves.
Unless we get more efficient about how much we can physically extract the SA output WILL start to decline.
Relatively soon.......

Gas - IMHO - and I'm pretty much in a SDAI-sized minority here - gas powered power stations are inherently wrong.
You get far less bang for your buck converting gas into electricity than you do for heating by gas or cooking by gas. Household use - 90-100% efficiency. Elec generation - 30-50%, followed by efficiency loss in transmission and whatever you use it for.
Using it for electric generation is a waste of resources.

And....
While I agree about the renewable energy welfare program in general, renewables (coupled with micro-generation) are the long term solution.
If you applied the same cost analysis - from birth to storage to decommission to subsidies - nuclear energy would likely be prohibitively expensive.
