Nations like India and China don't recognize US privacy or security legislation. American companies in both the medical and financial industries, thrilled to dump US staff, increasingly use offshore companies to process confidential client information. That's your medical and banking information. Once it's offshore, it's no longer protected by US privacy and information security law. Are contracts and security technology sufficient to keep your information safe? You'd better pray they are, because American law won't be able to.
California state Sen. Figueroa is hoping to regulate the issue. Undoubtedly she'll be branded some sort of anti-business wacko just because she wants companies to look beyond the bottom-line.
