Amazing isn't it that there seems to be this connection with violence and the belief that life is completely controlled by a higher power. Now I'm not condemning the people of faith that feel their lives and actions are in their own hands and simply defer their awe and thanks to a creator. I'm speaking of the people that consider their lives and the actions they take to be dependent on influences beyond their control, that somehow they have to follow some predefined path laid out by a vengeful and strict diety.
The most peaceful and secure people I've known in my life have been also the least religious. They seem to believe that this life on Earth is all we have and that tends to put more value on that time. To kill another is to rob them of that lone opportunity. There's no sending them to their judgement, no carrying out God's vengance, no sense to the payback of injustices of past generations. The Buddhist religion is one of introspection, not of salvation by conversion of everyone else to your way of thinking. Can it be used for evil? Certainly. The more complication one adds to the "meaning of life", the easier it is to distort the message into greed and avarice.
I look forward to the day our nation pulls away from its notion that it is blessed by God, when we throw out the assumption that the logic and reason that created the masterpiece of our Constitution was not of men but of some manipulative creator. I will always cast a suspicious eye on any action by a nation or group that carries the banner of some higher power's direction and backing.
