I'm replying to both your posts here Tom. Actually there have been very few "atheist nations" in world history. The Soviet Union is generally thought of as that but in actuality very few of their leaders turned away from religion. Of course you're correct when you say that there is a tremendous potential for evil when citizens of countries diefy their own leaders but you have to realize that when dictators attain that status they often portray themselves as messengers from some God. Generally in history, the most evil and bloodthirsty regimes have claimed some devine blessing to their quests for power especially early in their developments. Once the power is granted, there is a jealousy from the political leaders of the power of the clergy. It is at that later stage that those nations turn away from their need for devine backing.
A prime example is Hitler who used Biblical text extensively to create his country's disdain for the Jews. Once his power was consolidated he no longer needed that connection. The seed was already sown.
I hope you weren't trying to tie the term "socialism" with the term "atheism". They are absolutely mutual of one another in both meaning and intent just as trying to tie the terms "fascist" and "right wing religious fundamentalist" would be.
Current Events » in reply to BTW, I agree with your last sentence.
