As long as you realize that there are many concepts of "higher power" that do not involve religion. The worst abuses in history were from non-religious groups that worshiped either the State, the "collective," or in some cases, a human tyrant.

For the record: every nation in this past century that has committed mass murder of its own people has called itself "socialist."
