There are a hell of a lot of nations where it is death, sometimes slow and painful, to oppose the government and/or the leaders. In fact, throughout history this has been the rule rather than otherwise.
And historically, most rulers or governments have been imposed by deadly force. Or maybe you think every tyrant in history was elected to his position by a fair and secret polling process--"the will of the people."
Americans are so used to being able to shake their asses at their leaders that some of them seem to have developed the idea that this has always been the way societies have been organized. They aren't aware of freedom and lack of fear any more than a fish is aware of water. They aren't aware that the United States and a very few other nations stand out among all the nations of recorded history in being this way.
I've gotten a lot of crap for asking people to read stuff. I just wish more people had read the blogs from Iraqis. People who know what it means to live where opposition is not an option.
