Well put Mary Anne. I wish I had access on my work computer to some of my atheist chat room friends. They've done extensive research into this very subject and have found that the popular notions that founders of many of the "atheist nations" Tom describes, all had very strong religious backgrounds. That includes people like Stalin, Pol Pot, etc. It seems obvious to me that tyrannical rulers, no matter what their true beliefs, cannot contend with powerful church leaders that tend to shine the light on the attrocities they need to commit. A move to condemn those religions as enemies of the system is a natural evolution.
I truly believe that most of those despots got their mind-controlling training from the very bowels of religion itself. It's a marvelous indoctrination into how to convince sensible people that thoughts and methods often counter to their human intuition and logic are somehow required for the overall social good.
