PS

You can count by millions if you want, but you can only do that because someone else sorted through the corpses one by one to provide you with figures. Howling at numbers doesn't have the same effect: it allows righteous indignation without the sense of horror and recognition of individual suffering. Individual recognition helps people to understand that there is no such thing as good killing and bad killing, just killing. But if you deal with numbers all day long, maybe that's the most comprehensible way to relate.

When modern Christianity seeks to put criminals outside of the reach of secular justice and to place the burden of the crime on the victim, I will put it in precisely the same category as any other system that seeks to create two classes of citizens, the worthy and the less worthy; that continues its hold on power by the use of lies and secrecy; that balances its authority on the backs of its most vulnerable members; and that exerts pressure on those who speak out by depriving them of what they need to live. It belongs there.

I didn't notice the Republican Party speaking out against the abuse of women under the Taliban until the last couple of years, after we invaded the country. It had been going on for a long time before that, while the Taliban were our good buddies, under Republicans and Democrats alike. Now they trumpet their moral superiority. heh
