Spent a few minutes digging up who's running that site. Comes across as a grass-roots from-the-heart protest, doesn't it?
Swiftvets.com is registered to one Weymouth D. Symmes, who's treasurer of the PAC behind it: Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. They were set up in April, and their first registration form is here. It reveals such interesting information as the fact that they've taken in over $150,000 in contributions in just two months. Lots of donors tossed in a couple of thousand, like Paraclette Armor & Equipment Inc. (I'm don't think I want to go there), but $100,000 of that came from one person: Bob J. Perry of Houston. In the two months since their founding, they've spent $60,000 of the loot, mostly for the services of people who list their job title as "researcher". Other services include about $28,000 for media consultants, and the odd few bucks for Web designers and graphic artists.
Like I said, not exactly an amateur effort.
Bob J. Perry is a Texas developer linked closely to Joseph Coors, the notorious far-right rich guy and brewer. (See the "social network diagram" that relates people much the way Google relates Web sites, through networks of citations.) Perry's a heavy Republican donor in Texas and nationally, and bankrolled Tom deLay to the tune of nearly $800,000 through PACs. (Perry's rap sheet at the Center for Responsive Politics)
This Perry guy's not an amateur either.
Hundreds more links available to follow, but that seems to give a basic picture of who's really behind that "Swift Veterans for Truth" organization and their Web site.
Writes Weymouth D. Symmes:
I have joined with my fellow Swift sailors to seek the truth about John Kerry, his service and his documented lies about our service when he returned. To do so takes me out of my comfort zone; I have little to gain and much to lose.
What a load of shit.
Unfortunately, we'll be seeing lots more like him this campaign season. It's gonna get much uglier.
