Actually, I agree with your second position, which is why I felt it necessary to shine a little daylight on to Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth". They may be making "misstatements" about actions of decades ago, but they're doing it now. That sleeping dog would still be slumbering otherwise.
It's not inconceivable that the Bush campaign could make a grievous miscalculation and get their fingers burnt when it's uncovered. You don't need to automatically defend each and every action and statement they make--statistically you know you're going to be looking silly at least part of the time. The more that comes out about this, the more it looks like this is one of those occasions.
