Fact of political life: incumbents run on their records in office

Challangers run against the incumbent's record. Good news about incumbent's leadership is good for incumbent and bad for challanger. Vice versa.

Partisan hacks tend to get very emotional about this stuff, but it is really pretty simple. And it does not infer evil intentions on either the incumbent or the challanger. (nor on those who point out the connections)
