The religious right is only a small part of the GOP power base. If not for the RTL issue the Democrats would be courting them mightily. The Democratic black voters and Union members are, as a group, just as religious (and more numerous) as the "religious right" but the RTL issue seperates them.
The GOP holds the "religious right" by giving lip service to the anti-abortion people. If the GOP had absolute power consolidated they would drop the fundys like a hot potato. The Dems would do the same with certain segments of their base.
The result of absolute power by the Republicans would, in the worst case, be a police/corporate state, an oligarchy of the rich.
If the Demorats had absolute power the worst case would be a police/socialist state, an oligarchy of the intelligentcia (who are also usually rich).
Short of the emergence of a leader unlike anyone in our lifetime, the worst case would be a virtual certainty.
Many believe that the best situation is the Clinton scenario, the executive branch in stalemate with the Congress.
That which must be done usually gets done and the rest gets voted down or vetoed.
