and when those extremists start to gain too much in political power it worries me more than any other issue in the world. So in a way you're very right. Creating public policy based on religious beliefs is a direct threat to science, logic and common sense. It's the easy way out, the antithesis to hard work and difficult decisions.
It gives its proponents the ability to end lives and let some afterlife sort it all out later. Yeah, I believe that the Republicans sometimes get hurt by the fundies and have successfully kept them from getting a toe-hold to the true seat of power but we're in this very perilous time when the citizenry is no longer thinking based on reason but instead by fear. Extremism thrives in times like these and I'm taking on the challenge of increased vigilance to counter that. I challenged a liberal talk show host on his constant references to God in his program the other day.
I told him that his message, that George Bush was not a true Christian because he didn't act according to the teachings of Jesus, didn't resonate with me. I said that he was leaving out a segment of society that would instead like to hear that George Bush was not a good human, that it mattered not to me whether his actions showed Christian love but whether he showed human compasion, intelligence, and an understanding of human nature.
I'm tired of this "My God is bigger than your God" crap we seem to be falling into lately and I've decided that I can no longer sit silent about it. Sorry if it diminishes my message in your eyes.
