The pornography analogy is apt.

If sexual pornography partially satisfies some people who can't get laid, then gun porn may make those who feel victimized and insecure safer; those who think the world is out to get them, wants to steal their way of life. What better way to take your country back than to blow away the scum who took it?

The porn analogy is certainly applicable, as I mentioned in an earlier post, check out the gun magazines at your local stupormarket newstand. The lovingly photographed weaponry and the lurid prose that complements it, the glorification of the effects of gunfire and the precision and power of the ordnance serves a psychological purpose. So does the pseudo- technical tone of the articles. It makes the reader feel like he's an expert, too. Surely, not everyone who reads this is a cop or soldier who has a professional requirement to keep up to date on progress in ballistics.

There are other kinds of pornography at the magazine rack and the checkout line, too; car porn, motorcycle porn, sports porn, home improvement porn, celebrity porn. Hell, I read boat porn, I know I'm never likely to go to sea again. I suppose most of the time for most people, porn is a harmless release, a substitute for the real thing. But gun porn, like sex porn, although not necessarily toxic in small doses, still makes us uneasy, especially when consumed in large quantities. Or it should.

I'm sure you can guess where I think gun violence comes from. Unfortunately, other than some common sense regulations for the distribution and ownership of firearms, and restriction of some of their more extreme lethality, I don't know what we can do. The guns aren't the problem, the American psychosexual addiction to them is the problem.
