Especially when you include those who commit mass murder through others.
All of the skills associated with marksmanship are commendable, and in my suggestions I've looked for ways to preserve pursuits like target shooting. But I'd also note that none of those skills are unique to firearm usage. I recommend yoga and meditation ;-)
I tend to associate gun violence with men, and statistics back me up. Hence my comments about adolescent testosterone-fueled fantasies. I think your comments might actually reinforce gender differences in the psychology of gun usage and ownership. The logic of self-defense is different, with male swagger in evidence in the image of the brave frontiersmansuburban househusband facing down an intruder to defend his family. Your portrait of an abused woman using a gun as physical equalizer is a very different thing, psychologically, I'd say. Yet even this scenario can get complicated, enough so to be perennial fodder for Lifetime movies.
Mrs. Lanza was quite well-armed, I must point out.
I'd be willing to play the odds and make it tougher for men to get guns and leave women be. But we know that won't fly any more. We have to hold women to the same low standards as men.
