My girls are all markswomen.

All three of them can hit targets at a distance with a rifle and a handgun. Their father taught them.

The one living in England now doesn't get to use her skill, but the oldest and the youngest do.

They have all enjoyed learning to concentrate, to control their breathing. They like the camaraderie of team shooting. There's a group called the Zen Shooters; their slogan is "Be The Bullet". Our local district justice liked it so much, she asked for a hat.

I am reminded that range actually gives a woman an advantage under the right circumstances. More women are injured or killed as a result of domestic violence than any other single cause. A 130 lb. woman has very little chance against a 210 lb. man, especially if he's enraged. A 130 lb. woman with a handgun, trained in its use and with the will to use it, has a much better chance of walking away, because the man won't have as much opportunity to get close enough to beat, choke or bludgeon her.

It doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes the man has the gun, or gets it from her. Sometimes the woman lacks the training. Sometimes she lacks the will. (I couldn't shoot my child.)

Fortunately, all of my girls have chosen good men. I sometimes wonder how much their choices have to do with the self-confidence they developed in their sports activities, including the shooting team.

Just as an aside, I don't shoot, and my son never showed any interest in it either.
