Current Events » in reply to Maybe the problem is the underlying premise that something can always be "done."

Humans do things to make things better.

>"A mentally-ill person had unusual access to semi-automatic weapons, and was trained in their use, and tragedy resulted."

A burbwife who is convinced that the economic apocalypse is coming has a housefull of guns, available for the mentally ill guy to get his hands on. This seems to me to be a problem that could be addressed. Also, this situation should put to rest the claim that guns make you safer. And if further lends support to the studies that show that you are more likely to be killed in a confrontation if you are armed.

>"Sometimes a truck will blow a tire and skid into a school bus. Shit happens. You can’t really make a workable world where things like that are impossible, or even much more improbable."

Better tires, seat belts on busses (or some other technical solution to the problem of safety on buses, currently uninvented). This is what humans are actually pretty good at.

>"The belief that everything can be cured if you just make enough laws is not borne out by history."

Not everything. And some solutions even make things worse. That can inform the next attempt. It really is a virtue to make things better. And the worse the difficulty the harder we should try to solve it.

>"That, and you will always be left with those who don’t obey the rules anyway."

This is a stupid line of reasoning. It is exactly this argument that my hospital simile addressed.
