What makes guns different from other weapons like knives and clubs is that they can kill from a distance. This reduces the risk to the killer, in essence lowering the cost of killing. In this, guns are like bombs and arson: The weapons of cowards.
Part of the creepy "porn" vibe comes from that empowerment of the cowardly. It's like the adolescent fantasy of laser eyes, that kill with a glance, and with impunity. Guns foster a sick narcissism and delusions of grandeur.
I don't think it's an accident that mass murderers and serial killers are, on average, young men. One source cites the median age at around 28, compared to the median of 38 for the population as a whole. That, and the fact that most mass murder is done using guns rather than more impersonal yet more efficient bombs or arson, strongly suggests that guns foster a particular kind of adolescent emotional dysfunction.
In other words, guns do kill, when they attract disturbed young men to wield them.
