re: The topic is the war on terrorism

And two very different ideas on how it should be fought. What I'm arguing with Raoul, and others, is that some things you can do with police work--and good work is indeed being done that way in Europe, America, and elsewhere--and there are some things you can't.

When a government does not cooperate, you can either give up or take it up another notch. Afghanistan didn't cooperate. Neither did Iraq. South Africa voluntarily disarmed, as far as I know, without incident. Faced with force, so did Libya (maybe.)

Right now Iran is not cooperating, and we can see every day how impotent the usual "international" channels are. I don't know what the next step there is, but you can bet that holding a "summit" won't accomplish anything.

BTW, I'm a little tired of the "we love the war in Afghanistan, but not the war in Iraq." I will stipulate that some liberals here and elsewhere honestly fall into that category. I could name many names. But I was there in late 2001, and damn straight most of the Left around the world was up in arms over the Afghanistan invasion, and most radicals still are. I could name names here, too. Chomsky comes to mind, along with A.N.S.W.E.R.

If we had never gone into Iraq, you can bet the Usual Gang of Idiots around America would be just as hard over on our imperialistic aims in Afghanistan as they are now about Iraq. It isn't about the war. It's about politics, and always has been.
