re: United Nations

A good case can be made that the U.N. was dead meat at its founding, since it incorporated a totalitarian expansionist dictatorship--the U.S.S.R.--in a major position of influence at the very beginning. Pretty much everything having to do with international relations and human freedom was poisoned from then on.

Don't know if you can blame anyone for this--I don't really see as how any U.N.-type organization could have been founded after WWII without including the Soviet Union, and still have gotten off the ground at all. NATO, incorporating Western non-totalitarian powers, came a short time later, and filled the gap somewhat.

I would like to see either NATO develop into a more widespread organization of democracies, or maybe start some new outfit. I think the threshold of admittance should at the very least include a commitment to individual rights, and forms of government that respect them. I don't think the U.N. will ever be able to be reformed in its present state.

The United Nations does a very good job in the humanitarian fields, and the sooner it's retired to this function, the better IMO.
