Very well said, Art!
There is evidently a rejection of intellectualim, a disdain for complex issues. But the world and people's lives are complex. No way to escape from it.
There is the possibility Bush could start something so outrageous the population might massively reject it. But it could accept it, unfortunately, with smart arguments that hit most people in their heart.
For instance, how can Bush increase the number of soldiers in Iraq if he won't get help from countries that have so far refused? (Bush's victory is easier for the old Europe in that they don't have to suddenly change their mind, dealing with the same guy). Asking God for help? This is where facts catch up. Reinstating the draft? I wouldn't be surprised it could work (So many outrageous things have been accepted, up to now, with "god" and "patriotism").
The next step will be january: Can elections be held in Iraq or are they going to be forever delayed?
It's impossible for us to imagine how Bush can better protect americans against terrorism.
The terrorists are either:
-No more capable of organizing something like 9/11. The lessons were learned and airports, airlines, their personnels are now warned.
-Recreating groups, training in Iraq and terrorizing where americans are, in Iraq, right near where they train.
-Waiting for an opportunity to hit anywhere it's soft.
We don't know and we can't pretend this president is better than that one.
If there's a danger somewhere, it's advisable not to be wrong about who the enemy is.
Will Bush remain unilateralist? Can he afford it?
We'll see.
